Fifties Themed Wedding Dress Ideas

Fifties Themed Wedding Dress Ideas

Fifties fashion was all about femininity and lots of fabric, and wedding dresses were selected according to that style. Big skirts, small waists, puffy sleeves and lace were in vogue for wedding dresses at the time. To make your wedding dress in keeping with 1950s themes, you can incorporate some or all of these trends.

Full Tea Length Skirts
One common style of Simple Wedding Dresses in the 1950s was a move toward the less formal using tea length dresses. A tea length dress falls at the calf somewhere between the knees and ankles. A tea length dress is usually worn for fancy but not black tie affairs. These dresses still had the same feminine styling and circle cut skirts as the formal length gowns of the era but were more casual.

Small Waistline
A small waistline is a mark of femininity, and dresses were made to accentuate this feature in the 1950s. To get this look on the dress itself the skirt of your dress should be a circle skirt and start flaring out from the waist. To ensure a smooth and slim waistline under the dress, wear a shaper or corset that cinches at the middle. Add layers of tulle under the skirt to puff it out to form an extreme contrast to the small waist.

Lace Accents
Lace a very feminine accent. Skirts were often covered with a layer of lace or trimmed with lace at the bottom. Dress bodices could be covered with a layer of lace to match the skirt or just accented with matching trims. To achieve this look on your dress, add lacy edges to an existing style or have your dress made with a floral lace pattern layer over the main fabric.

Puffed Sleeves
Having gathers of fabric on your dress creates a lush, fancy and girl-y aesthetic. The circle skirt of the fifties was one way to do this but to add some extra fabric and lushness bridal gowns often has large puffed sleeves. The combination of this with an extravagant skirt creates a very 1950s style silhouette for your wedding dress. It’s possible to overdo puffed sleeves, however, so you don’t want to make them much larger than a cantaloupe or you risk looking more like you’re wearing a white 80s prom dress.

Types of Bustles on Wedding Gowns

Types of Bustles on Wedding Gowns
Wedding gowns often include bustles, especially if the wedding gown has a long train. Brides use the bustle to hold the train of the gown up off the floor after the wedding ceremony. This is essential in preserving the dress, as the train is likely to get dirty or risk getting stepped on or torn during the reception. There is a variety of styles of bustles that brides can select for their wedding gowns.

Over Bustle
The over bustle, also known as the ballroom bustle, hides the train after the ceremony and makes the Simple Wedding Dresses look like a traditional ballroom gown. Over bustles are create by positioning buttons or hooks at the waist. A tailor adds loopholes into the train to hook onto the buttons. This results in the bottom of the dress being one length all the way around.

Tufted Bustle
Tailors can create a tufted bustle by applying a series of jeweled hooks around the waistline of the dress. The gown’s train has coordinated holes to loop onto the jeweled hooks. The bride or her maid of honor then gathers the train of the gown in sections and hooks it around the waist. This creates a layered, or tufted, look. The jeweled hooks show through the bustle to add extra detail.

French Bustle
Tailors create a French bustle, also known as the under bustle, by tucking the train underneath the skirt of the dress. To create a French bustle, fold the bottom half of the train underneath the skirt, and tie it securely in place.

Pick-Up Bustle
The pick-up bustle is ideal for slender, tighter-fitting gowns that have shorter trains than traditional ballroom gowns. To create a pick-up bustle, attach one hook or button to the back of the center of the waist. Gather the train in two sections. There are two holes on the bottom of the train that hook onto the one button.

French Pick-Up Bustle
The French pick-up bustle is a combination of the French and pick-up bustles. One hook or button attaches to the waistline of the skirt underneath the train. Then, fold the train in half and the bottom half under. Loop a hole on the bottom of the train onto the button to hold the train in place.

Wedding Dress Styles for an Hourglass Shape

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Wedding Dress Styles for an Hourglass Shape
Choosing a wedding dress is one of the most important parts of planning a wedding. You want to choose one that flatters your shape and makes you look perfect on your big day. Shopping for and purchasing a dress that is made to flatter your figure means that you’ll end up looking slim, trim and gorgeous.

Ball Gown
The ball gown style Simple Wedding Dresses is one that is tight through the bodice and then flares out to a very full skirt, bolstered with tulle or petticoats called crinolines. The ball gown is great for an hourglass shape because it shows off your tiny waist and brings attention to the torso, while hiding any flaws in the bottom, wider half of your body. It’s a style of dress truly fit for a princess. Look for a dress that has a corset top so that you can adjust the tightness and bring more attention to your chest, shoulders and face.

Mermaid Gown
If you have an hourglass shape but are still fairly slender, then a mermaid style gown can really bring attention to your shape by remaining close to your body. A mermaid style is cut close through the bodice and hips and then flares out at the knee to create a look reminiscent of a mermaid’s fin. Those with a slender hourglass shape can really pull off this look, and it’s a great way to show off all of the hard work you did to get your ideal body for the wedding. Look for this in strapless varieties, so that the dress highlights only your perfect hourglass shape.

A-Line Gown
An A-line gown is ideal for someone with an hourglass shape who is a little more curvy. A-line gowns are the gold standard for flattering wedding dresses, as they hug tight through the bodice and then flare gracefully away from the body. This brings attention to a tiny waist and then balances out the bottom half. At first glance, an A-line dress would seem like a ball gown dress, but the A-line flares only slightly and lacks the seaming of a ball gown. A-lines are also more sophisticated in their styling and really flatter any size or shape hourglass figure.

Wedding Dress Design Tools
While not technically a game, the Wedding Dress Creator site lets site visitors design every aspect of a wedding gown. To the bottom right of the bride, users select the bride’s skin tone and may place the bride in one of the following settings: beachfront, estate, patio or seaside balcony. On the right side of the screen, users choose the following components for the bride: hairstyle (up, short or long) and hair color; neckline, silhouette and sleeves; gloves, shoes and stockings; earrings, necklace and tiara; dress accessories and accent color (which alters the flowers’ color in the background scene). Some necklines do not allow sleeves and will cover up necklace selections, while silhouette selection dictates whether the bride’s shoes will be visible. When finished, users may print out their design.

The Knot also provides a tool for bridal design. For “My Inner Bride,” users select Face and Body shapes, plus style and color for eyes, eyebrow, lips and hair. For the wedding dress, users choose components such as neckline, skirt and details (like sashes and sleeves) and extras such as earrings, hair accessories and necklaces. Users also may choose background colors or scenes.

arbie Wedding Dress Up Games

Barbie remains one of the most popular children’s toy brands, thanks in part to the longtime romance between Barbie and Ken. Fans of Mattel’s famous doll and the idealized romance between Barbie characters can prepare for a wedding—either for Barbie and Ken or for other characters—by engaging in various wedding dress-up games.

Doll Games
Kids can hold their own Barbie wedding parties and ceremonies with dolls, a doll-sized wedding wardrobe and accessories. With all the wedding-themed Barbie products Mattel has manufactured through the years, kids can hold events celebrating every aspect of a Barbie nuptials. If kids lack certain dolls, accessories or playsets, search sites such as Amazon or eBay to find older or discontinued items.

Using an assortment of doll outfits, kids may dress female and male dolls for engagement parties and bridal showers (even “groom showers”). For wedding ceremonies, kids can set up the Barbie “Wedding Chapel Playset,” which transforms from an outdoor chapel setting to a wedding reception, complete with gift boxes. When the time comes to dress the wedding party (bride, groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girl and ring bearer), kids can adorn the dolls with Simple Wedding Dresses , bouquets, tuxedos, flowers, handkerchief and ring. Kids can have different dolls alternate playing each role for multiple ceremonies and dress the dolls in varying wedding outfits.

Role-Play Games
Kids get in on the dress-up action with Mattel’s “Wedding Cake Playset,” which comes with removable bride and groom cake toppers and child-size engagement ring, tiara and veil. Kids may take the role-play even further by dressing in child-size wedding costumes, gathering their own flower bouquets and accessories, and taking turns dressing as various members of a wedding party.

Check Mattel’s online shop or outlets like Amazon for child-size Barbie-style clothing and accessories that would turn children’s pretend wedding adventures into stylish events. Children may take turns playing different members of the wedding party so they get the chance to dress up in multiple outfits.

Barbie As Princess Bride
Barbie and Ken finally marry in Mattel Interactive’s “Barbie as Princess Bride,” available for Mac and Windows systems. Players help Barbie prepare for her big day as she waits for Ken to return from a sea journey. Barbie’s magic mirror has 12 jewels surrounding it, representing 12 games. As players complete activities, Ken’s image becomes clearer in the mirror.

While this game does not focus strictly on dress-up, players do help Barbie design and customize her wedding dress and bouquet, as well as the dress and bouquet for the flower girl. In addition to choosing Barbie’s perfect wedding dress, players must deliver invitations to woodland animals; design, bake and decorate a wedding cake; retrieve wedding items that accidentally slipped into a well; help musicians; navigate Ken’s ship home; toss coins into the wishing fountain to make Barbie’s dream come to fruition; and customize the wedding photo.

Wedding Super Stylist
Mattel’s “Wedding Super Stylist” game, accessible at the Barbie I Can Be… site, lets players design a wedding ring, cake and dress. Players choose what they want to design, clicking on various options and styles to see which they like best. Players may click “Bride Book” to see how items look inside the wedding scrapbook pages.

For players to gain access to the wedding dress, they must register with the Mattel site and enter a code from an “I Can Be…” Barbie doll package (available at retail stores or online). On the game page, players log in and click “Go” on the bottom left of the screen, where it reads “Got a code?” Activating the code allows players to unlock game features.

How to Line a Wedding Gown

How to Line a Wedding Gown

A lining adds a feeling of luxury and comfort to a wedding gown. It lays directly against the skin, so it can protect you from the rough tulle that is often used to plump up wedding skirts. Although a lining is rarely seen, it provides a smooth finish to a fine garment and makes a separate slip unnecessary. A lining will not typically provide structure for the gown as it will be made of a smooth, lightweight fabric.

Lining a Wedding Dress
1
Select a lining fabric that is soft, pliable, and lightweight. The color of the fabric should closely match the shade of the gown. Crepe, taffeta, satin and tricot are excellent lining choices. Consult the pattern for yardage information.

2
Lay the lining fabric on a flat, hard surface. A large table is ideal, but clean solid-surface flooring will work just as well. The wrong side of the fabric should be facing up.

3
Lay the pattern on top of the lining fabric. Trace the pattern onto the fabric using chalk. You will not need to trace facings, collar, cuffs or the waistband. Make sure the fabric does not slip as you are marking.

4
Cut the marked pieces carefully with a very sharp fabric scissors.

5
Assemble the lining according to the pattern, using a small stitch and the appropriate tension setting on the sewing machine. Leave edges, zipper opening, and kick pleat or slit unfinished. Using the iron at the recommended temperature for the fabric, press seams open.

6
Lay the lining inside the dress, wrong sides together. Attach the raw upper edges with pins, matching each seam and marking. Sew the upper edges together, by hand or machine. If the dress is sleeveless, sew the armholes together at this point. If not already complete, apply any edge finishes to the dress fabric and apply the waistband or other waist finish.

7
Turn the gown inside out, so that you can only see the lining. Trim lining at the bottom of sleeves and skirt even with the outside dress fabric. Turn one-half inch under and press, then stitch to finish. A lining in the skirt will only attach at the top of the fabric (waistband) and should hang about one inch shorter than the outer layer. Loosely attach the wrong sides of the lining fabric and dress fabric with a basting stitch at shoulder seams and side seams from the underarm to the waist. (A sleeveless gown will not require these stitches.)

The Best Wedding Dresses

The Best Wedding Dresses

One of the first things brides-to-be begin searching for after receiving their engagement rings is the perfect wedding dress. However, because searching for a wedding gown is a personal experience, it’s important to select a gown based on individual preferences. To begin, identify the formality level of your wedding and decide which features of you body you wish to flaunt and those you wish to conceal.

The Silhouette

A-line gowns work well for elegant ceremonies as well as casual affairs.
Jupiterimages/Pixland/Getty Images The overall shape of your wedding dress provides the building blocks for the rest of the gown’s construction. For the best results, look for a silhouette that flatters your body without overshadowing it. For shorter women, empire waistlines help to add height. If you are full-figured, A-line gowns utilize smooth lines to nip in waistlines. Column Simple Wedding Dresses skim gracefully across narrow frames. Full ball gowns flatter those with small waistlines, and slinky mermaid dresses help create curves even if you have none. Another option is a tea-length gown, which adds a touch of vintage elegance.

Heavenly Necklines

Bateau necklines highlight stunning collarbones.
Jupiterimages/liquidlibrary/Getty Images Necklines frame your face and highlight your best bits on top. Though strapless gowns are currently the most preferred style for brides, other styles, such as sweetheart necklines or V-necks, help put a flattering spin on traditional gowns. Off-the-shoulder gowns draw the eye to the bride’s neck and shoulders, while high-neck gowns add a glamourous edge to any dress style. When trying different gown styles, select a neckline that draws attention to your strong points.

Your Gown’s Style

Traditional lace evokes ageless beauty.
Jupiterimages/liquidlibrary/Getty Images When searching for a wedding gown, chances are that the available dresses will fall into a few different categories: traditional gowns, glamourous gowns, simple dresses and Cinderella gowns. Use your wedding’s level of formality to judge the best wedding dress to suit your celebration.

Traditional gowns sport chic, minimalist silhouettes and work well for church ceremonies. Glamourous gowns often feature daring necklines, statement beading and eye-catching details that are best suited for a gala-worthy venue. Simple dresses, on the other hand, employ a pared-down look, featuring a single detail above all others, such as a strip of beading or Grecian-inspired gathers. Lastly, fairytale gowns are distinguished first by their meringue-like skirts and indulgent beading. Layers of tulle and pickup trains make these dresses a little girl’s dream.

Divine Details

Handmade bridal gowns will feature all the details you can imagine.
Jason Florio/Digital Vision/Getty Images Much of a gown’s beauty lies within the subtle detailing so prominent in couture bridal wear. Whether the detail you desire is a splash of color, delicate ruches or an oversized bow at the waist, gowns are available in nearly every style imaginable. If you cannot find what you are looking for, ask your gown salon attendant if you can order or alter a dress to suit your needs, or simply take your purchased bridal gown to an alterations specialist to add the details that will make your dress perfect.

How to Dress a Young Girl for a Wedding

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

How to Dress a Young Girl for a Wedding

Weddings are often a time to catch up with long lost family and friends while showing off your children. Of course the bride and her dress is the focus of the wedding, but your young girl’s outfit could be a runner-up. When she’s capturing everyone’s attention on the dance floor, you will be glad that you dressed her appropriately.

1
Determine the type of attire required for all guests. You must dress your young girl one way for a formal wedding and another for a casual wedding.

2
Dress your toddler girl in a fancy dress for a formal wedding. Her Easter dress would be good for a spring or summertime wedding, or her Christmas outfit would certainly do for a winter affair.

3
Buy a sundress for summer casual weddings or dress your young girl in a comfortable dress and cardigan for casual weddings in the winter or fall.

4
Match your toddler’s shoes to her outfit. Girls have so many shoe options to choose from, it’s hard to say exactly what they should wear, but if in doubt, black patent leather is always good for formal affairs. Casual weddings allow for sandals or more comfortable shoes.

5
Bring a second outfit for those inevitable spills and drips. Don’t bring shorts and a t-shirt, bring a back-up dress and leave it in the car for emergencies.

What Is the Meaning of a White Wedding Dress?

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

What Is the Meaning of a White Wedding Dress?

When a bride plans for her special day, she starts by shopping for the perfect wedding dress. At boutiques across the world the consensus seems to be the same; the majority of the wedding gowns are white or ivory. The Monroe County Historical Association states, “The tradition of the white dress began when Queen Victoria donned a magnificent white gown for her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840.” White was once a color that was hard to get for the common bride, it was typically only worn by royalty. Ever since white fabric became more affordable, brides have worn white on their wedding day.

History
According to the online resource From Times Past, Queen Victoria wearing a white gown in her wedding to Prince Albert started the trend in wearing white. At this time, white was a more expensive fabric, only able to be purchased by royalty or the wealthy. Brides couldn’t afford to purchase a wedding dress to only be worn one time, so most of them would wear their best Sunday attire or a suit Simple Wedding Dresses . As the Great Depression and World War II era ended, bride’s started wearing more white for their wedding gowns and after the marriage of Grace Kelly in the 1950s, brides started incorporating their individual style into the gowns to make them more elaborate.

Significance
The significance of wearing a white wedding gown in the 21st century is still thought to mean that the bride is pure. The website For Times Past states that, “in Godey’s Lady’s Book, 1849, this statement was printed: ‘Custom has decided, from the earliest ages, that white is the most fitting hue, whatever may be the material. It is an emblem of the purity and innocence of girlhood, and the unsullied heart she now yields to the chosen one.’” While history shows us that it was in fact the demand for the white wedding dress that once made it so popular as that kind of fabric was not made available to everyone until after the Industrial Revolution.

Time Frame
The trend started in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore the white gown in her marriage to Prince Albert. In the 1890s, the department store started making the color more available to brides and Ladies Home Journal supported the color saying, “… from times immemorial the bride’s gown has been white.” In 1920, Coco Chanel created the first knee-length white dress that, “… cemented white as the universal color of the wedding dress.” In the 1950s, Grace Kelly “wore a white silk and lace gown,” and started the movement of individuality in wedding gowns.

Considerations
Since it’s only relatively recently that white is the wedding dress norm, there were many others you could choose from and there was once a popular poem detailing the various color choices. An excerpt is ““Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in gray, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead.” In certain countries, like India and China, red is a common wedding dress color; so white is really only standard to the Western world.

Interesting Facts
During the Great Depression brides would often purchase a white wedding gown and then dye it another color after the wedding so they could wear it again. Monroe County Historical Association tells us that, “immediately following WW II, some brides made their wedding dress from parachutes their future husband’s used during the war.”
